Biodegradable Plastic Profiles Include Bioplastics and Biodegradable Polyesters
Plastics are the wonder materials of the 20th century. Lightweight, strong, and durable, plastics are manufactured into products that consumers want and need every day. The durability that makes plastics so useful, however, has proven to have major environmental drawbacks. Every year, millions of tons of plastics enter our landfills. It’s estimated that plastics take up 25% of our landfills by volume today, and it can take hundreds even thousands of years for these plastics to degrade. Many believe that the solution is biodegradable plastics that maintain the positive properties of our traditional plastics but will decompose safely in the natural environment in a relatively short period of time.
Bioplastics, Biodegradable Polyesters
Bioplastics that are derived from renewable raw materials like plant starch, cellulose, soy protein, and lactic acid are biodegradable because microorganisms consume them as a food source. Other bioplastics are derived from fermentation products, like Polylactic Acid (PLA), and biodegradable polyesters: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and Polyhydroxyvalerate (PHV) which are synthesized by microbes with the polymer being stored in the microbes' cells during growth. Just as we store fat for future energy consumption, these microbes store polyester which is a polymer that can be used to produce plastic. Pretty exciting stuff!
Biodegradable Plastics
Biodegradable plastics generally achieve best and fastest composting results in commercial composting environments. When considering plastic for your biodegradable plastic profiles, it's important to ascertain that the plastic product will perform as it is intended.
You can be assured that biodegradable plastic profiles produced by Keller Products will perform as promised. We only use biodegradable plastics that meet the American Society for Testing and Materials standards ASTM 6400 or D6868 and that are also certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (http://www.bpiworld.org) as having passed standards testing in approved independent laboratories.
